Full LED Backlight describes a new form of background lighting for LCD televisions. It replaces the CCFL Backlight (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Light) process using fluorescent tubes as a light source. In the latest generation of LCD TVs a host of LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) provides the illumination. These are arranged two dimensionally behind the liquid crystals of the display.
LED backlight technology offers a variety of advantages compared with traditional CCFL backlighting: first and foremost is picture quality. That can be measured in terms of higher contrast ratios, better colour saturation and increase image brilliancy. The LEDs also consume significantly less power, contain no mercury (unlike fluorescent tubes) and make the LCD TVs much easier to recycle.
